For this upgrade, your Bifrost needs to have its motherboard firmware updated by us, or by an authorized service center such as Electromod in the UK. This requires a specific programming device with an RJ12 connector, as well as software. Because of this, there is no self-install option, sorry
his DAC/Analog upgrade card betters the sonic and measured performance of all previous Bifrosts, including Uber. It incorporates the AKM AK4490 Veritas D/A converter, followed by a sophisticated fully discrete summing and gain stage with no capacitors in the signal path.
This upgrade does not require firmware changes, so it can be installed by experienced technicians.
Schiit Scheduling System Reduces Upgrade Time
Schiit can install the Bifrost 4490 board for you, with a convenient scheduling system that allows you to keep your Bifrost until we’re ready to turn it around immediately. Just place your order, and follow the steps in the series of emails. You’ll be notified when your order is accepted, when to send in your DAC, when the work is performed, and when it’s shipped back to you, for complete transparency.
Other Installation Options
If you’re an experienced electronics technician or engineer who is familiar with ESD precautions, or work with a good tech, you can choose to have the Bifrost 4490 board sent to you directly, fully tested and protected in an antistatic bag.
Please note that by selecting this option, you are saying, "Yes, I am, or know, a competent electronics technician who does not need hand-holding for this installation, and I will not allow an inexperienced person to perform the upgrade, since I understand there are no user-serviceable parts inside."

his upgrade changes any existing Bifrost or Bifrost Uber into Bifrost Multibit, a radically different DAC using the medical/military grade AD5547 D/A converter and Schiit’s proprietary closed-form, time- and frequency-domain optimized digital filter.
